Three Key Factors in Home Design

Style, comfort, and practicality! That’s it. That’s my big tip for ya. Lots goes into good home design, but there are the three key factors that I focus on. You want something that represents who you are, provides comfort, and is suitable. What if I told you there is a way to create spaces with all those things in mind?

Here are three tips for home design, ensuring comfort, style, and practicality.

Your design choices should serve a purpose in the designated space

Scale and function are key factors in home design. In small spaces, I suggest using versatile pieces. You can allow room for more storage by purchasing the right furniture. Those furniture pieces can be beautiful statement pieces, too.

Make sure you understand how your home flows. Your purchase decisions should focus on that. Keep the natural pathways throughout the home clear. Less can sometimes be more.

Choose materials wisely

There are a lot of fabulous fabrics, solid surfaces, flooring, and even paint options.

When making decisions about materials, consider where you use the items. For example, I love marble. I love the crisp white that you get in marble. It’s unlike any other solid surface material. Marble is not amazing in the kitchen for a high-use cook, and I’m a high-use cook! However, I have had marble in my kitchens and love how it aged and patina. You may or may not be ok with this.

For our latest kitchen remodel, I wanted a bit less work, and I realized that marble in my past kitchens was not a great choice. I knew I wanted a natural stone and wanted something light. Quartzite was what we settled on. Not to be mistaken with Quartz, Quartzite is a natural stone. It is a bit more stain-resistant than marble and does not etch as easily.

Choosing the right material is so important. Make sure the intended use and the constraints of the material are compatible.

Have fun

Your home is a reflection of you and your style. Amp that up. Sometimes, people can go too far, purchasing items based on function lacking aesthetic appeal. Know that you can have both. Designers and makers thrive with beautifully crafted items for our homes that serve multiple purposes. I don’t think you ever have to skimp on style to achieve comfort.

The best of both worlds

Choosing the right pieces and/or materials can be time-consuming. The payoff is more significant when it represents your style and saves money in the long run. Do your research. Unique pieces that are special to you and functional for your space tend to be the ones we keep. Design is fun. Take a few chances as you go!
