Taking time for yourself

Personal Lifestyle

One of my favorite quotes is, “never spend so much time making a living that you forget to make a life.” It is the ultimate reminder for taking time for yourself.
We cannot be at the top of our game without rest and taking regular days off. Our batteries need recharging. We have to stimulate our bodies and minds with something other than our work. So daily, we need to take time for ourselves. Even with all of those workdays strung together, I still prioritized time for myself.

I am still in the process of making this work, especially after coming off of 21 straight days of work. However, I do have a few things I like to do to take time to be at my best for my loved ones and clients.

Recharging during a busy schedule

I like to take time for myself to get up from the computer and go for a walk. Thirty minutes of fresh air puts me in a different headspace. A longer walk or bike ride at the end of the day often gives me the energy needed to get through the end of the day. I also like to cook dinner for my family and do this almost every night. To me, a great glass of wine, good music, and cooking something delicious help me unwind.

Implementing change

If your answer to ‘how do you make time for yourself?’ is ‘not enough, but I am working on it,’ don’t forget that it is never too late to implement change. Progress, not perfection, is a thing! Set boundaries and stick to them. I am a no phone person from 8 p.m. to 8 a.m. Rarely will you find me on a phone call that is work-related in the evening, and although I am up at 5 a.m. most mornings, I don’t take or make calls until 8 a.m. Setting these constraints has changed my life in so many ways, especially when taking time for myself.

Family time

I love spending the mornings in with no plan and at whatever pace the family wants. There’s nothing better than an extra cup of coffee or a lazy brunch. Making Sunday brunch is one of my favorite weekend activities. Our family is big on travel, beach walks, apple and cherry-picking at our farm, and nature hikes. With our kids all out of the house, my husband and I have also taken up golf.

Many things make for an ideal day off, but a day with my phone off is the ultimate day off for me. God bless my team for jumping in, so this is a possibility!
