Firstly, I am a lover of small, quaint, neighborhood fare as well as a resident of John’s Landing. It was devastating to learn that the iconic Corbett Fish House was another small business casualty of 2020. The community recognized it as a staple of the neighborhood with good fresh, gluten-free fish and chips and as a great watering hole for football watching. Equally as beloved, their neighbor Jola Cafe saw this loss as a chance to enhance our small community, grow their business, and pay homage to the fish house. Oh, and to clarify, Jola is a shortened version of John’s Landing! Isn’t that clever?
Jola Cafe originally opened in October of 2012 and was later purchased by Pascal Chureau and Olivier Ganry. Manager Zach Lassman said, “When word came that they [Corbett Fish House] were not going to survive the pandemic, our hearts sank, but we also realized that now was our time to make our years-long experiment a reality.”
Jola Cafe was prime for expansion in more ways than one. Because of guidelines for Covid-19 and with social distancing enforced, they wanted to provide more space for more of the community. They also wanted to expand their hours and offerings throughout the day. Over the summer of 2020, Jola Cafe acquired the old Corbett Fish House space. They knocked down the wall dividing the two spaces and began renovations. The larger eatery is now known as just JOLA and we could not be more pleased to see them flourish.
I am blessed to have such a talented and dedicated team to keep things running smoothly while my focus has shifted to the expansion. Everyone on the crew is deeply committed to their work, and this community, and are so excited to serve you into the night!” -Zachary Lassman, Jola Manager
Thursday, October 8th was the very first dinner and happy hour service in the newly renovated restaurant. It did NOT disappoint. With an expanded menu including a mouthwatering pork shank (pictured above), and weekly burger specials, there is a wide array of choices for anyone looking to satisfy a craving. Great gluten-free options for almost every menu item also exists – a homage to the 100% gluten-free Corbett Fish House. Don’t miss the delicious craft cocktails. We found the Old Fashioned as well as Mezcal Cocktail to be perfectly made.
There have been many losses and struggles in 2020. I am delighted that this local business is thriving and look forward to their continued success.
